During the promotion of Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige revealed major updates about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In a conversation with the U.S. press, he confirmed that Robert Downey Jr. will return — not as Iron Man, but as the iconic villain Doctor Doom.
Feige stressed that Victor von Doom was never a “Plan B” for Kang the Conqueror. Even before the controversy involving Jonathan Majors (accused of assault), Marvel had already planned to bring Downey Jr. back in a bold new role:
“Even before what happened with the actor, we began realizing Kang wasn’t Thanos. There was only one character who could truly take that central villain role, and that’s Doctor Doom. Thanks to the Fox acquisition, we finally had him.
I actually began talking to Robert about this idea before Ant-Man 3 even came out.”
While characters like Iron Man and Captain America will be recast, Downey Jr. will lead a new era of MCU villains as Victor von Doom. Feige also hinted that Deadpool & Wolverine may still continue with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, despite the overall reboot.
Feige also addressed the ongoing issues with the Blade movie, which has struggled with director departures and multiple script rewrites. Originally, some versions were set in the 1930s, but none moved forward.
Wesley Snipes returned briefly as Blade for Deadpool 3, but the current actor, Mahershala Ali, has only appeared in a post-credits scene of Eternals. According to Feige:
“We didn’t want to just put Ali in a leather coat and start killing vampires. Without a solid script, we didn’t feel confident enough to proceed — not for him and not for us.”
The Blade movie remains on hold with no release date in sight.
Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom will make his official debut in Avengers: Destiny, slated for release in December 2026.
